When friends invite you on a ski trip to Switzerland…you say yes! And when you find out that Zermatt skiing is included for free with your Ikon Pass? You start packing immediately. That’s exactly how this unforgettable adventure began. We turned a spontaneous invite into the winter trip of a lifetime—filled with chocolate, snow-capped mountains, engineering marvels, and deep moments of awe. Why not hop over to another country for a fun ski adventure!!?

Zurich ➡ Zermatt ➡ Matterhorn ➡ Magic.
Switzerland captured our hearts from the first step—and it should definitely be on your bucket list if it’s not already! From chocolate-laced dreams to soaring alpine peaks, here’s a look into our unforgettable journey through one of Europe’s most magical destinations.

Arrival in Zurich: Europe with a Swiss Welcome

Hyatt Regency Zurich Airport Room

We flew Swiss Air into Zurich, arriving early morning after an overnight flight (booked with Chase credit card points via Air Canada Aeroplan (Chase Preferred a great one to start with—more on that below). Thanks to an early check-in at the Hyatt Regency Zurich Airport The Circle (above – also booked on points transferring from Chase UR), we were able to drop our bags and set out to explore.

Morning Charm: Old Town & Café Schober

We began with breakfast at Café Schober, tucked into Zurich’s Altstadt (Old Town). Picture velvet wallpaper, antique chandeliers, and hot chocolate so good it should be a national treasure. A perfect introduction to Swiss coziness.

Sightseeing by Tram & Foot

Zurich was the perfect introduction to Switzerland. It’s a city that feels like a hug—clean, elegant, full of warmth and history, and walkable in the best way. We wandered along cobbled streets, explored charming old town corners, and soaked in lakeside serenity.

We hopped on Tram #4 from Zurich Hauptbahnhof, gliding through neighborhoods toward Lake Zurich. The lakeside promenade delivers mountain views, swans gliding past, and crisp air that instantly wakes your senses.

Top Experience:

One of the absolute standout moments in Zurich was the Zurich Highlights Tour with Cruise and Lindt Home of Chocolate, booked through Best of Switzerland Tours. This half-day guided tour seamlessly wove together every facet of the city we wanted to explore—by coach, foot, boat, and tram. Another great one is this 3-in-1 Walking Tour!!

The cruise across Lake Zurich was stunning, offering an unmatched perspective of the city framed by Alpine peaks and charming lakeside homes. But the true crown jewel of the experience was the visit to the Lindt Home of Chocolate.

The museum itself was beautifully designed and interactive, but the real magic was in the chocolate tasting room, where we sampled liquid chocolate and then velvety truffles straight from the source. It was both fun and indulgent, and surprisingly educational.

To top it all off, the tour included a 24-hour public transport ticket, which let us continue exploring the city on our own pace well after the official tour ended. It was the perfect way to get our bearings, experience the best of Zurich, and treat ourselves—literally.

Pro tip: Take advantage of the transport ticket to use the full 24 hours. It can be used for boat or bus! Zurich is compact but packed with gems, great food, and welcoming locals.

At night, we wandered through the Altstadt, browsed boutiques on Bahnhofstrasse, and took a peaceful detour to Fraumünster Church to see Chagall’s stained glass window, before strolling up Lindenhof Hill for panoramic views of the city skyline.

Zipping to Zermatt: All Aboard the Scenic Train

After a relaxing 3.5-hour train ride from Zurich (which flew by thanks to those stunning window views), we arrived in Zermatt under a blanket of stars and snow. We stayed in a cute bed and breakfast style Chalet – lots of great priced Chalets (or fancier hotels if you choose) can be found at Hotels.com.  Waking up the next morning to the Matterhorn towering right outside our window felt like stepping into a postcard.

Zermatt: Matterhorn Majesty in Every Direction

Matterhorn, Matterhorn, Matterhorn!

Gornergrat & Glacier Glory

We boarded the Gornergrat Railway, a historic cogwheel train climbing over 10,000 feet for jaw-dropping 360° views. With our Ikon Pass, the ride and ski access were included—a major travel hack.

Hikes, Gondolas & Igloos: Matterhorn Glacier Paradise

Igloo Dorf by Matterhorn in Zermatt Switzerland

While Jon snowboarded the slopes, I ventured on a hike to the Iglu-Dorf, a cool ice hotel to explore (where you can also stay the night if you desire), but also a hang out area for the mountain, think spring break vibes in the snow at 8,000+ feet—complete with country music, schnapps, and the Matterhorn watching over you.

Gondola in Zermatt Switzerland

The next day, we explored the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise—home to the world’s highest alpine crossing. I hiked from Zermatt to Furi, on a cleared path so I did not even need snowshoes! Jon was snowboarding in the area as well in the shadow of the Matterhorn. I took the Matterhorn Express gondola to the top to meet Jon and our friends, winding through picture-perfect alpine villages and groomed winter trails. The engineering of this gondola system is mind-blowing. Walking through snowy villages on winter hiking trails was a quiet, beautiful contrast to the bustling ski scene.

At night, the town is so adorable and great food and vibes – don’t miss Stefanie’s Creperie for some post-skiing or after-dinner crepes!
